Notes from the October 11th Meeting: – We had a big crowd for some mysterious reason the mayor of San Diego!  First up was Doug Frost with an invocation, and then new member/actually old member Carl Maartens gave us a rousing patriotic song -

Grace Chaidez brought a guest, Susan English, whose son Larry plays on Sundays…Danny Williams brought a guest from TranscenDance, Behin Behrozi, who looks like she’s been on the job more than two weeks…we are very glad to provide her organization with the support it needs…

Monica Ball brought two guests…sorry it’s a little dark…

Corrine started off the fines session with some fines for the ‘good advice’ she received from some members of the club that are not of the female persuasion like Kizer, Auerbach, Stillwell, O’Reilly, Thompson, and Day…Ryan Callan got stung for his aggressive fining advice…Kizer picked up the box to start collecting from some of the transgressors…Eldon is a healthy man times five years worth…

Grace Chaidez kicked in for the Chargers win and the postcards on the tables…Tom Bauer sat with all his friends…Geoff Blackman was a welcome sight and it was great to see him!…Karina and Ethel mentioned the big YP get-together at Ethel’s house (mmmm, pretzels…)…Fritz chipped in four quarters for closing the store…Drue reminded everyone to listen to his interview on ESPN Radio (link to follow)…Gene visited Key West for the commissioning of the USS Spruance, and Geoff mentioned that he flew the Admiral during the war…Jay is glad Eldon is talking to him…Judy mentioned the Diane Bell column with Bill Gibbs’ 101st birthday…Charlie mentioned that Ken is now very relaxed…Ken and Karina gave us an update in the Photocharity walk at Liberty Station (more below)…Brian Krause introduced Tom Donohue, Executive Director of Old Town Academy, who let us know how our gift will help educate children in both math and music (who knew?)…

TomNew Drawing 50/50: No one but Corrine knows the rules, but Karina and Ethel somehow managed to draw a pair of sixes and won $6 each…

Coley Flowers: After some spirited bidding, John Kizer took the prize!

Mayor Sanders provided a frank and candid appraisal of some of the many issues currently confronting his office and the city, and it is always nice to hear from someone that can tell it like it is.  Too bad some numbskull from the peanut gallery asked him a silly question…

Da mayor

Update City of San Diego

Speaker:

Mayor Jerry Sanders

Chairman of the Day:

Judy Leitner, MTS

Invocation:

Doug Frost

A note on our speaker…

MAYOR JERRY SANDERS

As the 34th Mayor of San Diego, Jerry Sanders was elected at a critical time in the history of our city. There are a host of problems that need to be solved and on January 1st, San Diego changed over to a strong-mayor form of government. Mayor Sanders was elected to office based upon his commitment to streamline city operations, make city government more accountable, and to make ethics and customer service the foundation of a new culture at City Hall.

Over the course of his 31 -year career, Sanders has proven skillful at transforming organizations so that they become more effective and efficient. Sanders served as San Diego’s Chief of Police from 1993 until 1999, capping a 26-year career with the Police Department. He streamlined the department and helped make San Diego’s neighborhood-oriented policing a national model, reducing crime by 49 percent. After leaving the Police Department, Sanders became the CEO of United Way, taking over an organization that had lost some of the trust of its donors and the agencies it supported. He slashed bureaucracy, restored the organization’s effectiveness and increased fundraising by almost 20 percent. In 2002, Sanders was appointed to the American Red Cross board after, amid controversy, the CEO and board of directors had been removed. He made finances transparent, oversaw major staff changes and restored the organization’s credibility and trust.

Jerry Sanders is putting all of this experience to work helping move San Diego forward.

Notes from the October 4th Meeting:

Well, wow! WHAT A MEETING!!! The bell rang and the crowd walked out as a nice welcoming gift to our new President Corrine on her first meeting.

Once we were all settled again, we listened to a wonderful invocation from Norma Trost, who we were happy is back in our presence! Then we sang “God Bless USA” led by Art and accompanied by a wonderful pianist, Tom. We had several guests in attendance, Monica brought Meredith Spriggs

who is promoting a Veteran’s Day fundraiser at Fluxx, Bill Gibbs had a table full of loved ones, and Stephen All brought his son Michael All who filmed our meeting! You better hope you didn’t chew with your mouth open because it will definitely be used as blackmail at some point!

Fines / Happy & Sad $$ - Queen Corrine fined everyone that walked out $1; Judy Leitner has 101 reasons to be happy & welcome back Carl Martens; Marian Lebowitz‘s Facebook account was hacked and she’s not trying to lose 28 pounds like Bill has; Bill Gibbs “I’m still here!”; Ken Coley gave $5 for Bill and for sitting in the audience again; Doug Frost 5 finger catch by Stanford QB Andrew Luck on Saturday; Jay Jeffcoat happy to be heading to Virgina for daughter’s wedding; Norma Trost $75 for her missed birthday but she’s NOT 75, plus $5 sad for a prayer for her nephew that was in a car accident;

Ethel Merriman $2 for Corrine; Dick Shaw $101 happy for all the good works Bill has done in his life; John Rush happy to clarify that his birthday is on the 7th and Bill’s is the 6th so Bill is older; Karina Sousa is responsible for the walk out although it was suggested by an anonymous Kiwanian, happy to raise $160 as a beggar for Red Shoe Day, and thankful for Bill who inspired her to be a part of our Kiwanis club.

Then we got to the big birthday celebration! Marian Lebowitz brought with her a talented soprano, Kara and a gifted pianist and tenor, Tom from the Master’s program at SDSU.

They played a few songs and Kara wooed Bill of course!

Bill said he enjoyed it and is happy for all his friends and he loves us all! He also donated $101 to the club at the end of the meeting! We are also sending wishes to Gordon Boerner who is also celebrating this week.

Our Chairman of the Day was Charley Kakos who gave a lovely introduction for Jim Floros from the Burn Institute who spoke about National Fire Prevention Week. He figured it was a better topic than “My Summer Vacation” by Eldon Thompson. Jim highlighted some programs that they have instrumented in San Diego that are making a huge difference with preventing fires. He said one of the number on sauces of burn injury is scalding which occurs mainly in the ages of 0-5 years. You can read some tips on how to prevent Scald Burns by clicking here. He also spoke about the huge Fire Safe Kid program they have implemented in schools and to read more information about that, click here. Keep in mind that we are also entering the Wildfire season so make sure you are prepared. You can download the informative Living with Wildfire Guide. Eldon, I would also suggest you check out Wildfire Safety! Jim, who was quite entertaining especially with his 5 punches at Eldon, also informed us that juvenile fire setting is the largest growing problem when it comes to fires. They are partnering up with USD to help counsel these firesetters since most do it as a shout for help.

Lastly, it is VERY IMPORTANT to have your Escape Route set up so if you haven’t already, which I know I haven’t, please go to the Family Escape Plans and prepare yourself! Better to be safe than sorry!

The Joker: The 2 winners this week were: Jim Floros-$2 & Karina Sousa-$8 – We have around an $80 pot and it’ll keep on growing!

*Queen Corrine is also looking for fun decks of card for our new game!

Coley Flowers: Jonathan Tibbits had the big $101 bid for the flowers and gave them to Bill for his birthday, who of course then gave them to his entertainment, Kara from SDSU.

Our Chairman of the Day was Chuck Day who raved about Sue Cox, the “biggest advocate for kids” and the expansive experience she has serving children, specifically at Children’s Hospital. Sue Cox went through her experience as a responder to 9/11.

She, along with a team of cheerful funeral home directors, were responsible for researching and determining the victims from the tragedy. The pictures she showed us reminded us that this can in fact happen to our country and we need to stay prepared.
