Notes from the October 25 meeting -

New and improved – now with pictures! – now, back to our regularly scheduled Tidings…

Ryan Callan recited a poetic invocation, and The Tidings lead the Battle Hymn of the Republic, adopted by both sides as an anthem during the Civil War (yes, The Tidings was on Jeopardy…)

Ryanthe tidings

Happy/Sad Dollars – Monica was late, and as Corrine pointed out, she lacked a fine free badge, now on sale for $39.95 in the lobby available for bid at the end of each month and active during the next for the entire month

…Mark McDonald, no doubt acting out of an abundance of caution, bid on and won the coveted fine free device for November…many ponied up for lacking Kiwanis pins…Mark chipped in again for way too much golf, the spare Rotarian on the dais, and the 11 he took on one hole

…Kizer saw the 11, and Coley was the snitch…Chuck Day was also late and chipped in for that and the fine International Relief Teams gala he attended (one of our sponsored organizations)

…Ken Coley also attended as did Karina Sousa whose family donated their home in the Azores as an auction item…Tom Bauer happened to notice the Official Retired Naval Supply Corps Officer tie that Kizer was sporting (it’s lovely, really, John)

…Ethel was walking the dog and spotted Ken

…Bill Gibbs is still here!…Monica announced her candidacy for the CCDC advisory committee but everything she said after ‘Victoria’s Secret’ was lost in the ether…Conny contributed for the foster dog she had that was adopted (yay!)…Jay Jeffcoat was fined for not checking in his Rotary Club guest (jeez, how did Rotary get in here so often?)…John Kizer introduced our honoree, Jay Jeffcoat for his 35 year Legion of Honor, with more community involvement that even The Tidings has room to list, and a Rotarian congratulated him (again?)

…thanks Kendra, he wouldn’t have been such a great Kiwanian without you!…Jay of course then went and won the 50/50 drawing, as we lost the deck of cards…Bill Gibbs engaged in his usual bidding war with himself and won the flowers.

Brian Krause introduced our speaker, Joe Tutino, play by play announcer for the LA Galaxy and the San Diego Sockers, who stepped in at the last minute for our originally scheduled speaker John Kentera who was called away for a family emergency.  We heard about the birth of sports radio and the slowly increasing popularity of footy in the US.

San Diego Sockers!

Speaker –

John Kentera, General Manager

Chairperson of the day –

Brian Krause, UBS

Invocation – Ryan Callan

A note about our speaker…

John Kentera, better known by his fans as “The Coach” has been a sports broadcaster and fan favorite in Southern California for over 20 years. Kentera has solidified his status as a So Cal icon hosting several top-rated shows over his long-standing, multifaceted career. He’s the voice of Padre Baseball’s Pre- and Post-Game Shows; Host of his 3 hour nighttime talk show; Host of the wildly successful High School Score Board Show, and Co-Host of The World Baseball Network with former Pro pitcher Bob Scanlan. Tune into XX1090 sports radio anytime of the day and you’re likely to hear his voice.

Kentera got his start in radio at 690 XTRA Gold in 1987 which in 1990 turned into the legendary XTRA Sports 690 all sports radio. Kentera’s television and radio broadcasting credits include the San Diego Chargers Football, Los Angeles Kings Hockey, San Diego State University football and basketball, the University of San Diego football and basketball, and High School CIF championships in both football and basketball.

Often referred to as a sports encyclopedia, Kentera prefers keeping to the fundamentals of performance spending less time on the hype that often surrounds the lives of professional athletes. His style is honest and direct while maintaining a refreshing lack of negativity. He’s proven that success in sports broadcasting doesn’t have to be synonymous with unprovoked controversy. A former athlete, coach and scout, he offers a unique perspective in a way that’s relatable to everyone.

Notes from the October 18th meeting…

Arthur sang a verse that we didn’t know for a song we thought we knew, and Tom provided some guidance for the day…

The great one...Mr. BauerActually, we couldn’t keep Tom away from the podium for most of the meeting…Corrine announced several birthdays, Jay Jeffcoat, Art Stillwell (who one-upped Jay), Steve All, Monica Ball, and Bill Gibbs chipped in again, what the heck…

Wild bunchMonicaWe had the usual number of guests for such a well-attended meeting, I must say…Ethel enjoyed attending the Soroptimists meeting with Gina and Charlie Kakos…Jay Jeffcoat mentioned that his daughter got married, no big deal, happens all the time, nothing to see here, move along…and he’s not quite broke…Alex Kim don’t need no stinking badges, but he did announce Rady Children’s Hospital Kids News Day coming soon, and that cost him…John Kizer kicked in for the miracle St. Louis Cardinals…Ken Coley reminded us about the PhotoCharity walk a thon, details at the end of this message…John Irons introduced Cdr. Patricia Withirspoon, who in turn introduced Petty Officer Troy Bacon…JohnThe CommanderThe Petty Officer & friendsTom Bauer (again?) mentioned that Jim Floros ditched the interclub with Southeastern…don’t forget to sign up in advance for those interclub visits, BTW…Monica Ball had the privilege of handing out some Youth Services (secretly, the YP committee) grants…Julie Watson of Uplift, and Sarah Hernholm of WitKids…Uplift

The wristband!

Mysterious Corrine Game – Ron Munroe & Ken Coley won the princely sum of $10 (hey, it’s tough to be a prince these days…)

Flowers by Coley – I kept hearing bidding from one person, and that of course was Bill Gibbs, who presented them to the Commander, to no one’s surprise…

Our speaker – Tom Bauer (what?!) introduced Keith Slotter, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI field office here in San Diego, who finally got some good duty after Buffalo, Miami, Cleveland, and the J. Edgar Hoover Building…he introduced our law enforcement honoree, Gabe Ramirez, told us what he could about Mr. Ramirez’ most recent operation, and then told us a funny story about Martha Stewart (well, the attorneys thought it was funny…)

G-ManG-Man & prezThe Tidings would like to thank volunteer photographer Ryan Callan, who only burned out one camera during his service!
