KPBS – Where News Matters

Speaker – Tom Karlo, GM

Chair of the Day – Brian Krause, UBS

Invocation – June Prewitt

A word about our speaker…

Tom Karlo has been KPBS’ General Manager since February 2009, but his career at KPBS began in 1973. Tom is only the 5th general manager in the 50 year history of KPBS – having worked his way up after starting as a student while attending San Diego State University. Prior to becoming the General Manager, he served as associate general manager for more than a decade.
Tom’s vision for the future of KPBS is to position the multi-platform public media organization as the premier source of local news analysis in San Diego and Imperial Counties. KPBS’ local content on TV, radio and online is created to complement and enhance the strong national programming from National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service.

Tom is very community driven in his role as General Manager. He spends much of his time representing KPBS in the community and deepening relationships with new and current donors and corporate partners.

Over the last 34 years Tom has worked as a slow-motion cameraman for NFL Films on Sundays during the football season. He has filmed 13 Super Bowls and received a National Emmy for Sports Cinematography in 1991.

Tom is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area but has lived in San Diego for nearly 40 years. He and his wife Julie have been married for 38 years. They have 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren. Tom and Julie have lived in East County for 35 years.

Outside of KPBS, Tom serves the following local organizations:
- Board of Directors for Pacific Southwest Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society
- SDSU Alumni Board of Directors
- Member San Diego Downtown Rotary

Tom’s wife Julie is a board member of St. Madeline’s Sophia Center.

Notes from Meeting on January 24th & Happy/Sad Bucks

A somewhat abbreviated Tidings, as The Tidings is relying on pure memory for this…first, let it be said that Acting President Brian Krause is perhaps the most qualified and best organized president since…well, since The Tidings himself!  He may even be slightly more handsome!  No question about it!  And what a public speaker – my goodness!

Second assistant left handed vice president

Great leader in action (although somewhat fuzzy)!

We got off to a good start with Jay Jeffcoat providing an inspiring invocation, and Carl Martens lead a nautical themed patriotic song – sadly, there are  no photographs to document this, you’ll just have to take The Tidings word for it.

We had an interclub visiting today from Sweetwater…Don Sturek celebrated a birthday in the usual manner…we did somehow manage to get in some happy and sad bucks, for example Steve All who is always happy to make it in especially when he’s feeling better…

…a visitor from Coronado may become a member…John Wood brought his usual guest once again (his current wife) and made a presentation to the YMCA and Executive Director Alicia d’Angelo which will help them a great deal, even if it won’t keep Eldon’s feet warm…

Don’t forget the See’s Candy promotion that Ken Coley is promoting…and Doug Frost announced a campaign to rescue the club charter from certain death (if slowly dissolving is the equivalent for pieces of paper).  If you have questions about this process or the condition of the original 1920 charter, Doug has all the answers…we appreciate your support!

The man with the answers

We inducted new member Alberto Motola, who is shown here with Mark McDonald enjoying the fine leadership of the club by our acting president Brian Krause…

"Man, that is some great leadership!" "You said it!"

Unfortunately, Aztecs Baseball Head Coach Tony Gwynn was unable to attend our meeting, but Jay introduced Assistant Coach Mark Martinez who provided us with good background info on the impending conference changes.

"Thanks for those leadership tips Brian!"

Coach Martinez also introduced us to some of the Aztecs players, Brad Haynal and Tim Zier…

Brad!

Tim!

We were also pleased to present our scholarship check to Coach Martinez!

The Joker Knows Charlie and Marilyn Copeland were winners, but not big winners, if you know what I mean (will somebody tell me what I mean?)

Coley’s Flowers: In Bill Gibbs’ absence, Jon Tibbitts was high bidder on a flower arrangement

Neil Huddelson came from Kiwanis International to teach us about Eliminate Project going on. He explained the process through tetanus and how we have easy access but in third developing countries it’s not easily available. It is $0.60 per tetanus shot, including delivery and 3 shots of this tetanus protects the mother and her baby from tetanus. They are trying to deliver enough vaccines to the developing world to eliminate ALL neonatal tetanus. The technology is finally available to realistically eliminate tetanus and Unicef has already eliminated this in 29 countries. Since the vaccine has developed 25 countries have eliminated tetanus.
